First fatality

We had our first fatality – Ozzie the Goldfish died last night. I shed one or two tears for the poor thing in private. Never thought I’ll get attached to a goldfish, but surprisingly they all have their own unique personalities and one can get to know them pretty well (and get attached) while watching and taking care of them everyday. Katya didn’t seem too perturbed, but when we went swimming pretended to be a dead fish by floating on her back without moving and demanded stories about the dead fish. She loves stories - everything has to be turned into a story – “tell me a story” is her most common demand. I wish I was a better storyteller.

Lots of repetition! Patterns. I used to tell Aidan stories about "Aidan Mouse", who seemed to be a lot like Aidan...but I always started the stories the same way, "Once there was a little mouse, and his name was Aidan Mouse, and he had a cute little nose, and pink little ears and whiskers!" It all had a lilt. I'd get to the end of that and have no clue what the story was going to be about, but he didn't care. Just get the beginning right!

You inspired me, and I got Ilya a bowl and fish for his birthday. He lost one already, too. :(

I had fish growing up and what I remember most about them was that they were always dying and we were always replacing them. I don't know if we took horrible care of them or they really do die that easily. Hopefully the other fish will be OK.

I love how kids process things with role play. My three year old often plays dead Pixie (dog). Sorry about your fishy.

yeah goldfish do die quickly. Get sucker fish (the ones that clean the tank) - they live for ages. I can relate to being sad about the fish though... my little bro at some point decided that it was a good idea to feed a whole box of fish food to the fish at once, so I had to clean out the tank quickly and the fish... well some of them got flushed down the sink accidentally... I was pretty sad then :) I'm sure Ozzie is in a better place somewhere... or reborn as a tiger or smth else :)

OMG!!!
I've been so caught up in my own drama I didn't even know about Ozzie's tragic demise.
Trinity Rose will be please to know that Nanna has yet another pet. I don't think their mom even really liked animals. But so far she has two dogs, a rat, a cat and now a goldfish...
My sympathies on your loss.
Big love.
